The enactment of Title IX by the Supreme Court has completely transformed the athletic landscape within our society today. Female participation in both high school and college sports has sky-rocketed since the 1960's. The number of women's collegiate athletic teams has increased from an average of 2.5 to 8.45 per school in 2003. Despite this tremendous progress, significant gender disparities still remain and the pace of change has slowed.

Female students have witnessed only small advances in sports available to them and the percentage of scholarship expenditures for women's sports since the early 1990's. Womens teams make up only 37% of athletic program operating expenses across the country. Financial resources provided for women's sports have increased significantly since the enactment of Title IX, but so have resources provided for men's sports. Men's teams overall have one and a half times as many coaches as women's teams, and the men's coaches are paid more than twice the amount paid to coaches for women's teams. Women also make up 57% of college undergraduates but receive only 42% of athletic participation opportunities.
